Rice Optical Colour Sorter

A rice optical color sorter (also known as an rice color sorter, rice optical sorter or rice color sorting machine) is an automated industrial device that uses photoelectric sensor technology to detect and separate defective rice grains and foreign impurities from healthy rice based on their color and optical differences.
It serves as the critical final quality control step in the rice milling process, ensuring that the final bulk packaged product meets strict food hygiene, aesthetic, and market standards.
What It Removes
The machine uses high-speed industrial cameras to distinguish good rice from defective materials, instantly ejecting:
- Discolored grains: Chalky, light-yellow, mildewed, immature, or black-spotted rice.
- Foreign matter: Small stones, pebbles, glass, plastics, and weed seeds that match the physical size of rice but differ in color or texture.
How A Rice Optical Color Sorter Works
The complete optical sorting process happens in milliseconds through a synchronized multi-system layout:
[Hopper/Vibrator Feed] ➔ [Chute Alignment] ➔ [LED/CCD Scanning] ➔ [Image Processing] ➔ [Air Nozzle Ejection]
1. Feeding & Alignment: Rice is poured into a top input hopper. A vibratory feeder distributes the grains evenly down narrow, slanted chutes to create a uniform, single-layered stream of falling grain.
2. Illumination: As the grains free-fall, they pass through a scanning chamber illuminated by powerful LED or halogen lamps to optimize color contrast.
3. Optical Detection: Ultra-high-resolution CCD, RGB, or monochromatic cameras capture real-time images of the falling grains from multiple angles.
4. Signal Processing & AI: Advanced image software compares each grain's pixel data against pre-programmed parameters (such as acceptable color, size, and shape boundaries).
5. Pneumatic Separation: If a defect is detected, the central computer commands a precise, high-speed air ejector valve to fire a micro-blast of compressed air. The blast knocks the single bad grain out of the stream into the rejected bin/outlet, while clean rice continues falling straight down into the accepted material collection bin/outlet.
Key Structural Systems
Modern optical sorters, produced by specialized manufacturers , rely on five core systems:
1. Feeding System: Comprises the hopper, vibrators, and channels to manage gravity flow.
2. Optical/Detection System: Includes the high-speed industrial sensors, lenses, and material / background lighting plate.
3. Signal Processing Board: The computerized motherboard running AI algorithms that sort by texture, dimension, and hue.
4. Ejection/Air System: High-frequency solenoid valves(ejectors) hooked up to an air compressor.
5. Human-Machine Interface (HMI): A touch-screen graphic dashboard allowing operators to set sensitivity levels for various rice varieties (e.g., basmati, jasmine, glutinous, or parboiled rice).
